Sammy was up early and ready to meet Mr. Fox. He looked out the window and saw Mr. Fox waiting for him at the edge of the woods. Once again Sammy ran as fast as he could to meet Mr. Fox but stopped before he got too close. He never wanted to run into Mr. Fox like he had before.

“Sammy,” Mr. Fox said excitedly, “all the animals are meeting at the lake today. We’re celebrating a special day!”

Mr. and Mrs. Owl were sitting in their tree home as Sammy and Mr. Fox came by.

“Good morning, Mr. and Mrs. Owl,” said Sammy. “Are you waiting for someone?” asked Sammy.

“Yes,” replied Mr. Owl. “Miss Deer wanted to talk to us.”

“Here she comes,” said Mrs. Owl.

Miss Deer was humming softly to herself and prancing happily down the path toward them.

“Good morning, Mr. and Mrs. Owl. It is a beautiful day for a trip to the lake, isn’t it? The sun is out and there isn’t a cloud in the sky. The temperature is just right. Oh, it is wonderful.”

“Did you want to ask us something, Miss Deer?” Mr. Owl looked at her, wondering what she had on her mind.

“Why yes, I do! Do you think I could take the children to the lake by myself? We’ll start out early and be there before anyone else arrives. I’ll teach them songs and tell stories as we walk to the lake. I’ll watch over them and make sure no harm comes to them.”

Mr. Owl knew that Miss Deer loved the little forest animals. To Mrs. Owl’s surprise, Mr. Owl said, “Yes. I think that is a good idea!”

“We’re gathering at the lake. Do you know the way?” asked Mrs. Owl. Mrs. Owl wasn’t sure that it was the best idea for Miss Deer to take the children. Miss Deer had been known to get confused.
