The preparation for winter was an important task for the animals. Mr. and Mrs. Owl watched their forest friends as they did what was necessary to survive the winter months. Many animals were picking up dried leaves and little branches for soft and warm beds. Some were gathering food and, in many cases, eating as much food as they could. Mr. and Mrs. Owl wanted to help in any way they could, so decided they would be the last animals to hibernate in the hollow of their tree home.

Mrs. Owl had begun planning for the long winter months when the leaves on the trees started to change color and the squirrel family gathered and buried acorns. She had cleaned, swept, and put everything in order in their home. Mrs. Owl was confident she and Mr. Owl would be warm and comfortable.

Sammy looked out the window and saw the first snowflakes of the winter season. He knew that soon he and his family would be settling in for the winter. He wanted to go one more time into the deep woods to see his forest friends.

“Mother, is it all right if I go visit my friends in the deep woods today?” asked Sammy.

“I think you’d better go soon, as the sky looks like a winter storm may be coming,” remarked Mrs. Skunk.

Sammy put on his coat and walked toward the woods.

Mr. and Mrs. Owl were still sitting outside, huddling together and trying to keep warm, when Sammy came into the deep woods.

“It’s good to see you, Sammy,” said Mr. Owl. “How are you and your family doing? Are you getting ready for winter? Look at the snow coming down! It looks like we’re in for a good snowfall. I’m surprised you are out in this kind of weather.”

Sammy could feel the snowflakes in his eyes as he looked up at Mr. and Mrs. Owl.

“We’re doing fine. I wanted to come today to tell all my friends in the deep woods how much I am going to miss them.”

He looked around and said, “It is so quiet in the woods and it looks so different. Winter does change everything, doesn’t it? Do you know where my friends are?”

Do you think Sammy will see all of his friends?
