Sammy lay in bed one morning, thinking about Dr. Raccoon. He wondered why none of the forest animals in the deep woods knew about him. “That is so strange,” he thought. Even the owls didn’t know, and they usually know everything that goes on in the deep woods. They fly around at night and get all the news for the following day.

Then it dawned on him! He jumped up from his bed and went to his school books. He opened a science book that told about a dentist.

“That’s it!” said Sammy. “The animals in the deep woods don’t know about a dentist. They haven’t the slightest idea what a dentist does! I must go into the deep woods and teach them. I shall be a teacher!” He smiled and thought, “Imagine—ME, a teacher!”

He picked up his science book, tucked it securely under his arm, and headed for the deep woods.

“Hello, Sammy,” said Mr. and Mrs. Owl. “It is so good to see you. What have you got under your arm? We’ve never seen anything like that before.”

Sammy proudly said, “It’s a book.” He held it up so the owls could see it.

“What does it do? Does it move by itself? What kind of an animal is it?”

Sammy laughed out loud. “It’s not an animal.” He opened the book, flipped through some pages, and explained. “There are words on the pages, and you have to know what they are. Then when you read the words you learn things. It’s like the book talks and teaches you. There are hundreds of books and each book teaches you something.”

Mr. and Mrs. Owl looked at each other and gave each other a nudge. They stared down at Sammy.

Mr. Owl remarked, “Do you expect us to believe what you’re saying? That thing, that book, talks to you?”

“It’s harder to explain than I thought it was going to be,” said Sammy. “You don’t hear the book talk to you. When you read it, it is like it comes alive! It tells you things and you learn from it.”

Because he knew the owls didn’t understand and were totally confused, he quickly said, “I came in the deep woods this morning because I have something important to tell you.”

“I’m glad you are changing the subject,” said Mr. Owl. “My wisdom doesn’t come from a book.” He pointed to his head. “This is where my wisdom comes from.”

Immediately Mrs. Owl exclaimed, “Oh, yes, he is so full of wisdom, and I’m so proud of him. Ask him anything, Sammy, and he’ll know the answer.” Then she added with a smile on her face, “I’m fairly wise, too.”

“Okay,” said Sammy. “I’ll ask you one question, and I want to see if you know the answer. What is a dentist?”

Do you think that Mr. Owl can answer Sammy's question?
